Personal profile
Rob Greaney was born in Wellington New Zealand on December 28th 1959. From very early on he showed a keen interest in music and art and carried in his being that sensitivity this is both the blessing and the curse of the artist. Rob became interested in the guitar at the age of 12 and co-wrote his first song in 1972 with his school friend Chris Rogers.
Much of Rob's gifting lay dormant through some pretty turbulent teen years but at the age of 25 life took a dramatic turn for Rob and he picked up his songwriting again.
Since 1994 music and songwriting have taken Rob to many countries, from Bangladesh to Malaysia, Indonesia to India, Myanmar to Nepal. In that time has developed a keen ear for ethnic sounds and has allowed himself to be influenced by the melodic and rhythmic moods of the Middle East, South East Asia and the Sub continent.
He has written and published songs in many languages and has produced 4 albums in Indonesia selling in access of 30,000 copies.
Rob teaches songwriting in New Zealand and established the Geetshala (Hindi for House of Song) School of Songwriters in Maharashtra India in April 2006. He has a keen interest to researching how songs can be used to help benefit health and be utilized as a tool for teaching better agricultural methodologies in third world economies.
Rob says; "I believe songwriting is about 20% talent and the rest is just very hard work. I feel that the best melodies often arise spontaneously but good lyrics are crafted over a period of time. This has been a particularly heavy burden for me sometimes spending days or even weeks searching for the right combination of words and phonetic sounds to try to bring the to life in another person just what it is I'm feeling or experiencing myself".
